《英语史》梳理英语发展历史,聚焦英语语言内外,既分析促进英语从一地方方言发展为全球通用语的经济、政治、文化等语言外部原因,亦探究英语语言内部诸要素,即其词汇、拼写、发音、语法在此发展过程中所经历的变化及其变化规律。课程内容按照英语发展的历史阶段划分为三大部分,共分10章,36节。1-3章回溯古英语阶段英语语言状况,4-6章总结中古英语阶段英语所处地位及语言特点,7-10章分析现代英语阶段英语所历经的重大变化并最终发展成为全球通用语的语言内外部原因,综析英语语言在全球化语境下的发展态势及未来走向。

课程摈弃英语为母语的语言史学家梳理英语史的立场,从跨语言、跨文化视角分析英语语言发展历史,融入适量的英汉语言发展历史对照分析,并对英语在中国的使用情况及中国人的英语语言特点加以总结,不仅可令学习者掌握英语语言发展进程及语言内部规律,提高英语学习效率,并可提升学习者对语言的宏观认知,理解一门语言与其母国的政治、经济、历史、文化之间存在的辩证关系。
